“Teddy bears at first appear trivial. They are toys—playthings for children and symbols of innocence, comfort, and nostalgia. But the teddy bear is also a metaphor for the way humans manipulate the natural world to our own ends. The teddy bear is an idea: a docile, cute, friendly invention far removed from the wild animal that inspired it. I create teddy bear anatomical specimens with a pretense of realness to emphasize the artifice of a familiar but unconsidered subject (…) The anatomy of the teddy bear is wholly planned by its creator to appeal to the biological response of human adults to care for their cute, round-featured, helpless babies. The manufacture of teddy bears is a blueprint for bioengineering trends that are taking place today—without the biology.  But the sharp canine teeth in a teddy bear skull serve as a reminder that nature can only be tamed to a point.”

“In my work this romantic ideal of union with the natural world conflicts with our contemporary impact on the environment.  These pieces are in part responses to environmental stressors including climate change, toxic pollution, and ogm crops.  They also borrow from myth, art history, figures of speech and other cultural touchstones  (…)  In each case the union between man and nature is shown to be one of friction and discomfort with the disturbing implication that we too are vulnerable to being victimized by our destructive practices.”

The Bambi Foundation supports contemporary non-object art projects, with an emphasis on experimental cinema and projected image installations. The foundation accepts proposals from a wide range of artists, disciplines and medium, and focuses on works that cannot be easily accommodated by market-based art scenes. It offers up to 8,000 euro per project and even more, depending on the requirements of the project.

In the previous year the foundation has supported projects of artists such as Brice Dellspreger, Catherine Sullivan, Mirjam Thormann and Adam Rabinowitz.

The committee assembles three times a year. Each application should include a short description of the project, timeframe, budget, a short description of the applying artist’s work, and images of previous works. Next deadline is set for 10th July 2010.
